Diomedes speaks for the Argives to reject Idaeus
"So he spoke
and a hushed silence went through all the ranks.
Finally Diomedes lord of the war cry shouted out,
"No one touch the treasures of Paris, Helen either!
It's obvious--any fool can see it. Now, at last,
the neck of Troy's in the noose--her doom is sealed."
--Fagles, 7.460-465
Diomedes obviously takes the Trojan willingness to make some concessoins to try and negotiate and end to the war as a sign that there strength is faltering and that the Argives will have only a short time left before they can finally end the war and raze the walls of Troy, killing the men, looting the city, and carrying of the women as their own.
