The United States Immigration Act of 1965 abolished the National Origins quota system and issued visas that favored relatives of citizens and
permanent resident aliens.
This produced major changes in patterns of
immigration to the US. Immigration from Asia leaped dramatically.
Between 1992 and 1994, relatives of American citizens and permanent
resident aliens, skilled workers, and spouses and children entered into
America.
After 1994, 480,000 relatives, 140,000 skilled workers, and
55,000 citizens of nations that have sent few immigrants are allowed
into the US.

As the main entry for most immigrants, New York has become one of the
most unique cosmopolitans in the world, strong economically, abundant
culturally.
Albert Einstein Irving Berlin songwriter black rights leader WEB DuBois
black poet Langston Hughs actress Marlene Dietrich La Guardia, former
mayor of NYC Edith Chen, virtuoso, winner of the Ivo Pogorelich
International Solo Piano Competition.
So many immigrants have contributed to the building of
America...artists, doctors, teachers, lawyers, musicians, writers...we
all have to America.
Our culture clearly bears the stamp of many ethnics. Jazz music
developed from west Africa, Baseball developed from an English game,
hamburgers were from Germany, as was the Christmas tree.
On television and on newspapers, different languages can be seen and heard. Different
parts of New York City are clearly ethnic communities with ethnic
festivals.
In allowing immigration, we perhaps do not realize that we are in fact
creating a mosaic of people and creating a multicultural society.
To think of the US is to think of freedom and diversity.
The US is made up of immigrants. We are immigrants. What we have now, what we are, came
from immigrants.
Our accomplishments are theirs; their accomplishments, ours.
