A.) Introduction
On a small island in New York stands the Statue of Liberty. Today, few people know that it was intended to represent American liberty.

Instead, the uplifted torch has been seen as a welcoming beacon to those millions who crossed the Atlantic in search of a better life. Even now it reminds Americans of their common condition, being immigrants from foreign shores.

The US is a nation of immigrants. With the possible exceptions of the American Indians and native Alaskans and Hawaiians, almost every resident of the US has some immigrant ancestors. The history of immigration spans the history of America.
