There are two main
kinds of automobile engines, the piston engine and the rotary
engine. Both are internal-combustion engines, which means that
fuel is burned inside the engine.
In a piston engine,
exploding fuel pushes the pistons up and down inside the cylinders
and that up-and-down movement turns the shaft. Most cars on the
road today have piston engines. Diesel engines are piston engines,
too.
