Beginner's Tour
Overview
|
- The ignition system
allows electricity to flow from the battery through wires to the
electrical starter motor, which starts the engine.
- The battery stores
electricity to start the car and supplies current for car
accessories.
- To prevent the
battery from being used up, it is connected to the alternator,
which generates electric current to restore power.
- The gears in the
transmission start the work of carrying the power to the
wheels.
- Gears change the
power and direction of the force from the engine. They control the
movement of the engine power.
- The transmission
changes a small amount of torque into a lot of torque, and sends it
through the drive shaft to the drive wheels.
- In a rear-wheel drive
car, the engine power is transferred to the rear wheels by a drive
shaft.
- With front wheel
drive, the engine power is connected to the front wheels by a
transaxle. The transaxle does all the things that the drive shaft
and differential do in rear-wheel-drive cars.
- There are two kinds
of brakes, drum brakes and disc brakes. Both use friction, the
force that slows down moving objects.
