Power steering is a
way to reduce the resistance at the wheel of a steering system. It
consists of an engine driven hydraulic pump and high pressure lines
connected to the steering box. The hydraulic pressure does not
actually turn the vehicle, but only assist the operator in doing
so. A proportioning valve directs the flow of the fluid depending
on which direction the vehicle is turned. These systems are still
able to function without hydraulic pressure as manual systems if a
failure occurs.
