Because the exhaust gases leave the engine under high
pressure, their exit would be accompanied by an extremely loud
noise. Because of this problem, the muffler was invented. This
muffler basically reduces this pressure of gases so they go out of
the tailpipe quietly. It does this by sending the gases through a
series of plates, tubes, and holes. The location of the muffler is
usually under the rear end of the car and it connected to the
tailpipe.
