Using Older Cars for fun and training?

Several questions for anyone: Have been considering the purchase of
a late 60's, early 70's vehicle to become a learning project car for my
14 year old son and I. We've been eyeing Mopars and some General Motors
stuff, based mostly on looks (what he thinks are cool!). I'm wondering
about the advisability of putting time and money into an older car,
particularly since we live in the Los Angeles area where smog stuff is
a grand ordeal. Will we lose the ability to even drive non-smogged cars
in the near future? Also, is this still a good idea in general. It seems
it would be neat to work together, to teach him some of the very few things
I know about cars, and also get him going on a car that he'll have strong
ownership and responsibility feelings for. Any thoughts? Finally, there's a
fairly straight 1970 Dodge Coronet 500 down our street. Good car, or bad?
