Influencing the young was a vital part of Hitler's plan to capture the minds of the German people. Both girls and boys were strongly encouraged to join the Hitler Youth, an organisation divided up into different sections according to age. Those who failed to join often found it difficult to go to university or to get lobs once they had left school. The Hitler Youth indoctrinated its members, making them love the Führer, hate the Jews and obey all orders without question. Older boys did strenuous physical exercises, designed to prepare them for service in the German Army.
The Nazis also closely controlled education in schools and universities.
