The Nazis had racist ideas like many extreme nationalists. They believed the Aryan 'race' was superior and that other groups, particularly Jews, Slavs, gypsies and black people were inferior.
Victimization of Jews began with government and Nazis boycotts of Jewish shops. Jews were encouraged to leave Germany. Some were just dumped across the border. The first German concentration camp was set up at Dachau in 1933. Each group had to wear a badge. Jews were forced from their homes to live in Ghettoes in certain towns and cities. A special Council formed by the Nazis (the Judenrat) ran each one. These organized health, education and police. They had to supply money and workers to the Nazis. Soon they faced more serious demands. |
