Adolf Hitler was born in 1889 in Austria. Army service in World War I disciplined and hardened his character, giving him a love of military organisation. After the war his life took on meaning only when he saw that in politics he could play the great role he felt he was born for. Hitler was made Chancellor of Germany in 1933 and being an ambitious man he aimed to set up the Third Reich. With this object in mind, Hitler began conscription and by 1938, he was ready to turn on the whole of Europe.
