What are your responsibilities as a marine geologist on our cruise?

My job is to help locate the hydrothermal vents since I have been exploring the Endeavour Segment sea floor for many years and mapped several of the vent fields in that area. My specialty is high-precision mapping and I can help navigate submersible pilots and/or remotely-operated pilots to areas that I have visited and mapped previously. My research interests in marine geology, mid-ocean ridges, seafloor hydrothermal systems, seafloor mapping and imaging, evolution of sulfide deposits morphology [form and structure] and evolution of hydrothermal vent fields. Another aspect of my job is to run an educational program that takes science teachers to see and experience scientific research with scientists in the field.

How did you prepare for this job?

I earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Geology from the Universite Paul Sabatier, Toulouse, France, in 1981 and a Master of Science degree in 1984 from the University of California, Los Angeles. I learned everything about oceanography on the job. I learn by trying out things and doing them.

"It's very important to find the right combination of things you like and work hard toward what you really want without losing hope that you will eventually get there. I have been able to combine all the aspects of what gets me excited in life in my job. What drove me to the sea floor and now to run program like REVEL are curiousity, eagerness to continue to always learn, interaction with people, passion for geology, love of discovering new territories, countries and people, challenge of new languages and cultures and enthusiasm for what I do--and it is not all geology (I teach French, I paint, draw, make jewelry, love teaching at all levels, etc.)"
