What are your responsibilities as benthic ecologist on our cruise?

As a benthic ecologist on a cruise, I am in charge of coordinating operations such as deploying benthic camera systems, current meter moorings and plankton pumps. On submersible cruises, I prepare the science basket for the sub and participate in the dives. I also work with the ship's captain to make sure all the science operations are organized and safe.

How did you prepare for this job?

I prepared for the job by taking lots of science and math courses in high school and college, and then by preparing a PhD thesis in graduate school.
