Willie Bester: Township Scene (1998)

    Work in progress.

At any one time, Bester is usually busy with three different works, mainly for practical reasons, because oil paints take time to dry. In this, one of his works that is nearing completion [July 1998], he depicts a scene from the Crossroads township. In it he is showing township people's lives and dreams, and how they realise them. The double-story shack depicted here is the manifestation of somebody's dream, not a simple shack. Bester cuts out headlines and phrases from local newspapers and pastes them onto his sky, not only adding interest to an otherwise plain space, but also connecting township life with the world around it and daily events.
