Jonathan Comerford: Baying Clips (1988)
Jonathan Comerford created this silkscreen while still in Scotland. The monolithic-looking stones resemble the crocodile clips he often used to use, symbolising the torture carried out by the military on people under questioning. Stones appeared such as these in the Scottish landscape. The large target in the background could be a rising sun or moon. The clips could be people or animals baying at the moon, suggesting rituals. The idea of rituals goes back to the 'ritual' of National Service in South Africa up until very recently. A call-up to the army was almost a ritual because it showed a 'coming of age.' Comerford is showing this in this work, placing it anywhere on the timeline during the 1980s (which is when he was called up to the army).
