Nyanga Arts Centre established
The Nyanga Arts Centre was established in 1979 by a number of art enthusiasts to serve the residents of Langa, Guguletu and Nyanga. With assistance from some established artists and agencies, the Centre has built up substantial resources for art education. The Centre runs regular classes and workshops in painting, graphics, drawing, sculpture, pottery, music, poetry, writing and drama. The Centre has participated in a number of art exhibitions, working closely with the South African Association of Arts, the National Gallery, the Baxter Theatre, the University of Cape Town Extramural Studies and Drama School and the READ Educational Trust.
The Nyanga Arts Centre is an organisation working to broaden opportunities for creativity and expression for the local community and its aim is to supplement the art education and facilities that were hopelessly inadequate in the townships. It provides for creative individuals who seek to advance the quality of African art and culture and it links like-minded democratic organisations and individuals in the region.
