This group formed with the slogan "UDF unites, Apartheid divides," aiming to replace Apartheid with democracy. It wanted to give all South Africans of all races a voice in a new democratic government. It consisted of about 600 anti-Apartheid organisations, including Africans, whites, coloured people, Indian people, workers, women, youth and student organisations. The UDF organised boycotts and stayaways.
