Forced Removals began occurring in the 1950s and continued until the demise of Apartheid. Two of the most well known and most devastating examples of the government physically removing whole settlements of black communities were Sophiatown outside Johannesburg and District Six in Cape Town. The destruction of people's homes and lives left thousands of people with traumatic emotional scars.
