Defiance Campaign
This campaign was aimed at getting political prisoners on Robben Island to be released. It started with a hunger strike by detainees, which resulted in the release of most political prisoners. Hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets in defiance of the bans the government had put on them. For example, many people went for treatment at segregated hospitals, poured onto 'whites only' beaches and marched in the streets in carefully organised protests. Organisations and individuals defied the restrictions laid on them and declared themselves 'unbanned.' After the release of some ANC leaders in October of this year, mass rallies were addressed in the name of the ANC. In this way, the ANC effectively unbanned itself.
