Talks in Dakar
In 1987 a party of 62 mainly Afrikaans-speaking South Africans flew to Dakar to meet with leading members of the ANC. The reason they had to meet out of the country was because the ANC had been banned wince 1960, and operated in exile. After the talks, the two groups issued a joint communiqué that supported a negotiated settlement for South Africa and included the demand that all political prisoners be freed and the ban on the ANC be lifted.
