Pass Laws were first instituted in South Africa before the Nationalist government even came to power. Blacks were required to carry their identification passes or Pass Books at all times, and people were constantly harassed by police demanding to see them. Failure to produce their Pass Books resulted in harsh punishment or jailing. Finally in this year the Pass Laws were abolished.
