Joanna Miller
I am 18 years old and have lived in Cape Town, South Africa, my whole life, although I have lived in America for a while. I first heard about ThinkQuest through my father and coach, Jonathan Miller. I was immediately intrigued by the opportunity to create an educational website, and was thrilled to be able to focus on art, my passion. Even though the project had a slow start, once we began defining our site and discovering where we wanted to get, I really began to enjoy myself. For me, the most rewarding part of the project has been meeting and conversing with the artists on this site. I visited Jonathan Comerford at his workshop and all our information on him is first-hand, which is very exciting, because presently there is no other documentation on him. It was also very exciting to get to know Willie Bester, one of today's most prominent South African artists. I found talking to the artists on a one-to-one basis very rewarding, and it really made their art, and art in general, come alive for me. While learning more about South African art and artists, my personal knowledge of Apartheid - which only ended a few years ago - has expanded dramatically. Even though I was alive during most of the events portrayed on our timeline, I was aware of very few of them before this project. In this respect I feel that I can now truly call myself a South African, because for the first time I know about our past, as well as our present and desired future.
