Jonathan Comerford: Catching Clouds (1998)
In this recent work, Comerford is delightfully showing a couple literally catching clouds through their dining room window. The clouds represent the new social needs and democratic changes that are taking place in South Africa since the 1994 elections. Just after the elections Comerford said that everything was shot "up into the air." Now those things, being the clouds, are coming back down to our level. He is showing that no matter what we do, we can't stop the changes from coming into and affecting our lives. This work clearly shows how he has both moved into colour, and is offering a more subtle commentary on socio-political issues in South Africa.
