Conclusion (by Talitha Kotzé)

|
I first encountered the work of Jane Alexander in 1995 when I read about her award in the press. The picture accompanying was obviously the Butcher Boys. Until this year, to me Jane Alexander meant the Butcher Boys. Not long after I read about it, I was fortunate enough to go and see the work in the South African National Gallery. I was stunned. It was (and still is) the most powerful three-dimensional work I have ever seen. These creatures thump in on your physical and mental being. One feels frightened at first, but as you stare at them for a few minutes, your muscles start to relax and you move closer. Every rounding of the body intrigues one and when you look into their eyes, you fear them, but also pity them. The impression was long lasting, as was the impact of each visit to come. |
I think the purpose of a true artist is to convey their innermost feelings and experiences in a way that shows complete honesty and in the end creates a product that is completely original. I have immense respect and fascination for this South African artist.
