The Senate
wing (located in the north side) is a truly beautiful site. The walls and ceilings of the
Senate ground-floor corridors are covered with frescos and oil paintings which were
completed by Constantino Brumidi and his assistants. The paintings depict historic
American events, symbols, inventions, and portraits of prominent figures.
The framework is elegantly composed of Native
American plants, animals,
and leaves. The floors of the
three levels are patterned with
tiles that match the walls. The main artistic feature of the Senate wing is called,
"The Progress of Civilization", which was crafted by Thomas Crawford in 1853.
The Progress of Civilization is composed of many figures carved in marble.
