The Sagrada Familia is one of the most famous sights in
Barcelona. Gaudi began to work on this cathedral in 1863. His intentions were
that the the Sagrada Familia would be the great modern church of Barcelona and become
represent many Christian symbols. The cathedral consisted of a nave and four aisles
with transept andapse and an exterior ambulatory with eighteen large towers symbolising
the twelve apostles, the four evangelists, the Mary, and Jesus Christ. The
belltowers each have a spiral staircase with text engraved on it horizontally and
vertically. The pinnacles at the top are examples of the surrealist imagination of
Gaudi. They are covered in mosaics and crowned with artistic crosses.
