I have a question. Does selflessness exist at all? No matter what you do, it's for your own gain. If you give to charity, it's to ease your guilty conscience or to make youself feel better, or even to try to buy yourself a spot in heaven. If you're simply act nice to people, you do so in the hopes that they'll be nice back or that you'll benefit from their friendship. Is there something wrong with assigning nobility to certain actions? Afterall, that's the basis of morality and it's what our society is based on. Do any philosophers' writings touch on this?
