Like Plato, Aquinas presents for us a hierarchical view of reality. He starts with God, the creator, and works his way down through the levels of perfection in creatures. "For some things have being only in this individual matter; such are all bodies. There are other beings whose natures are themselves subsisting, not residing in matter at all, which, however, are not their own being, but receive it."
