For our Online Virtual Tour, we took a tour of the Girlsite offices for the web site www.girlsite.org. Girlsite is a site created as a safe, fun and productive environment for girls on the internet. Besides just being all-around-cool, Girlsite does web journalism that relates to teenagers. Part of their site is Web Journalism Media (WJM)- young women from around the Los Angeles area work as correspondants for the Young Womens e'zine web site. We choose this as our virtual news room for two reasons: first, as oppossed to CNBC & ABC on the Web, this news room is the primary outlet for reaching the public.WJM has no other media interest that works both with and sometimes against their on-line site. Second, we have first hand experience how this virtual news room works because each member of the team has worked as a GirlSite correspondant in one fashion or another. The office is a medium-sized room called, "The Generator", complete with funky design and tons of Macintoshes (and a few PCs). The office has an ISDN connection to the internet to allow quick connections for updating their site. The Rockin' News Chicks got the chance to see what's like to work as a full Girlsite journalist.
