First of all, an image should fit in with the rest of your website. Use a good image editor (Paint Shop Pro, for example) and save your image in a supported format (GIF or JPEG.) You can also scan photos into your computer and save them as a JPEG (GIFs tend to lose color detail.)

Try to avoid image overkill. Also stay away from big images - images take a long time to download.
