Glossary

Genetics

The study of inheritance in relation to the study of health and growth.

Glossary

Inheritance

Every individual has certain distinguishable characteristics which they inherited by their parents through genes.

Glossary

Chromosome

A microscopic strand found in the Nucleus of a cell, that consists of thousands of genes and determines numerous characteristics.

Glossary

Genes

Are a singe part of a chromosome that produces a single effect on the body.

Glossary

Alleles

A set of matching chromosomes is inherited from each parent.  Therefore each person has two sets of genes inherited.  Genes occupying the same position on the chromosome affect the same characteristic, though they may have a different effect i.e.- Brown and Blue eyes.  A set of genes such as this is called an allele.

Glossary

Dominant genes

Are strong genes that produce an, effect even when only present as one on the alleles. They mask the presence of a recessive gene.

Glossary

Recessive gene

Are weak genes that do not have an effect when only one of the genes is present as one of the alleles.  They have no effect if they are with a dominant gene.

Glossary

Mutation

The process that produces new and different genes by altering the DNA.  It is a change in the bases of the DNA.
