"lipid" refers to both fats and oils.
Lipids' main function is as energy source. It contains over
twice energy as much per gram as carbohydrates. (37 kJ
per gram)
Also, it forms an insulating layer beneath the skin to prevent heat loss.
Its another important function is as cushion. Fats surrounding
the heart and kidney act as shock-absorbent to protect them.
Its main sources are olive oil, maize oil, margarine, butter and meat.
