We Ask Victims' Families for Their Reaction to Announcement of New Inquiry

The following includes reactions from family members of the victims of Bloody Sunday

We asked them:

1. How they felt about the New Inquiry's announcement, and

2. What they hope the New Inquiry will achieve.

"Suspicious, of how they would conduct a fair Inquiry. I was also thinking how ashamed Lord Widgery's family must feel. I have nothing but good memories about my brother, Lord Widgery's family must feel disgraced at the part he played in the cover-up of Bloody Sunday."

"My hope is the truth will come out and justice will be done but I honestly don't trust the British government to do the right thing. I believe it may be another whitewash."

...Liam Wray Nash

"All my memories of my brother are good, but Lord Widgery's family must feel ashamed of the part he played in the cover up. How dare the British do a character assassination on my brother and my family"

"I hope we will get truth and justice. I believe the New Inquiry just my get at the truth but justice will not be done"

...Linda Roddy, sister of William Noel Nash

"Thank God they are going to do something at long last."

"The truth and justice so we can lay our dead in peace at last."

....Maura Young, sister of John Young

"I wanted to believe what he was saying was true but my faith in British justice has been shattered. I will just wait and see."

"My hope is that the truth of Bloody Sunday goes down in the history books. If Gerard's name is cleared. Soldiers will not be prosecuted."

...Mary Doherty, sister of Gerard Donaghy

"My thoughts were of complete relief"

"The truth and all the demands met."

...John Duddy, brother-in-law of John Johnston

"I was very glad, but at the same time I am very skeptical of what kind of Inquiry it will be, e.g. will the British establishment be looking for an unprosecutional or will they give us the justice we were entitled to for 26 years?"

"I hope it will give us truth and justice."

....Michael Bradley, one of the those injured on the day of Bloody Sunday

"The truth at last, but we'll have to wait and see!! I hope Mr.. Saville can be fair as we can only pray that he will be."

"The families of those who were killed will at last have their names cleared and the truth will be made known to the whole world. "

...Alana Burke, wounded on Bloody Sunday

"Very, very pleased and happy. I thought it could never happen. I was very happy for the relatives of the dead. It was great news after 26 years."

"I believe that the truth will be told and the dead will have their names cleared."

....Patsy McGowan wife of Daniel McGowan who was injured on the day of Bloody Sunday.

"A mixture of relief and hope. Relief as it took 26 years to get this far. There is also the fear of a fudge (Widgery Mark2?). I only hope that the British establishment cannot afford another cover-up."

"Truth and Justice, nothing more."

...Joe Friel, one of those injured on the day of Bloody Sunday.

"I was a 15 year old eyewitness, standing 2 1/2feet from 17 year old Michael Kelly when he was shot."

"It was a long time in coming. Too long! I felt a great sense of relief for the families of the deceased and the Bloody Sunday wounded. The families, especially, have been condemned by all previous British Governments to a kind of perpetual wake. The resolution of Bloody Sunday, therefore, is as necessary for the living, as well as the dead."

"The truth with justice and a recognition by the British government that its involvement in the violence of Bloody Sunday, including the cover-up by the now discredited Lord Chief Justice Widgery, condemned our province to a virtual state of war, resulting in the loss of too many innocent victims."

....Don Mullan author of "Eyewitness Bloody Sunday"
