Prime Minister Announces New Inquiry

On 29 January, 1998 the Prime Minister announced in the House of Commons that a New Inquiry should be held into Bloody Sunday. This proposal resulted out of the families' campaign for a new inquiry as well as from the Irish government's report which contains new evidence and material surrounding Bloody Sunday and the Widgery Report.

"..it is expedient that a Tribunal be established for inquiring into a definite matter of urgent public importance, namely the events on Sunday, 30 January 1972 which led to loss of life in connection with the procession in Londonderry on that day, taking account of any new information relevant to events on that day."
