White
Star Line's Dream
|
White Star Line's dream was to
create three massive ocean liners that would set the new standard in luxury and comfort.
Bruce Ismay's and Lord Pirrie's plan was to introduce the Olympic, Titanic, and
Gigantic, the three largest ships in the world, as the first vessels to cross the Atlantic
Ocean in near record time while still offering opulence.
|
Designing
|
Lord Pirrie, the chairman of
Harland & Wolff, worked with Bruce Ismay and architects from White Star Lines, to
design the RMS Titanic. Their intentions were to design the largest, most luxurious,
indestructible ocean liner. Many new techniques and engineering plans were
introduced to help prepare Titanic for its maiden voyage.
|
Assembly
|
Assembling the Titanic required a
unique and highly complex organized method. The ship builders used specially
designed and constructed contraptions that helped fabricate the different parts.
After the parts were constructed, the myriad of workers spent countless hours preparing
and moving the enormous parts into position. The final stage was assembling the
different section to complete the ocean liner, RMS Titanic.

| MAIDEN
VOYAGE |
The Lure
And The Lore
|
Titanic became known for its
exceptional luxury and unmatched comfort. Its Maiden Voyage attracted the richest and most
powerful people around the world. The largest attraction of the Titanic was her
immense size. however, her size was more than matched by her interior, which boasted
the finest quality of furnishing, carpet, and artwork. On the other hand, a few
people would not travel aboard her because her size was too intimidating.
|
The
Voyage
|
Titanic's Maiden Voyage was the
Atlantic Crossing, one of the most lucrative routes, which began in Southampton and
concluded in New York. During this time, the crew became more aquatinted with their
duties while the passengers became more aquatinted with the ship.

Stories
From Survivors
|
After the fateful accident, the
survivors were rescued by the Carpathia. During the voyage home, and afterward, the
survivors were questioned and interrogated about the incident. Unfortunately,
because of the chaos and havoc aboard the Titanic, many of the survivors were unable to
give cogent and understandable recollections of the incident. This section contains
most of the documented recollections of the incident, which played a valuable role in
putting the pieces together.

Titanic
Strikes An Iceberg
|
On April 14, 1912, Titanic made
legend. On that eventful night, the huge ocean liner struck an iceberg. The
ship, which was believed to be unsinkable, began to take in water, and after a rigorous
four hours, the Titanic had dropped out of sight. That night cost the lives of over
1000 people, and caused the death of Legendary RMS Titanic to be a permanent mark in
history.
|
The
Trip Home
|
After the Titanic dropped out of
sight, the survivors in the lifeboats searched for survivors in the dark waters.
Unfortunately, few of the people could survive the freezing waters, and only six were
recovered. A few hours later, the survivors were picked up by the Carpathia, and
taken home. On the voyage home many people realized, for the first time, that they
lost their loved ones. This became one of the hardest moments for the survivors, and
it took a long time, if not forever, before they were able to completely cope with their
losses.

Locating
The Wreck
|
Robert Mallard, working with
French efforts, used state-of-the-art technology to locate the Titanic wreck. The
search teams used the newly redesigned Argo, SAR, and Angus to search the ocean
floor. It took him and his team over 12 weeks of constant, 24 hours a day, searching
before they began to find remains of the ship. This section describes in in-depth
details the painstaking process of locating the famous wreck.
|
Exploring
The Wreck
|
Robert and his crew were the
first members to explore the sunken Titanic. They Alvin and JJ to maneuver
throughout the ship, while taking many video and still image shots. For the first
time the explorers began to realize the severity of titanic sinking. While they
examined the stern, bow, and debris field they began to piece together the events that
lead to Titanic current position. After Robert's exploration many more teams
followed, and much more was learned.
|
Putting
The Pieces Together
|
After many teams dived down to
the wreck they had the long task of figuring out what really happened. A myriad of
trained professionals worked on many teams to slowly, but accurately, piece the events of
Titanic's unfortunate fate back together. As they examined the pictures and video
from the dives, they noticed many interesting facts that helped explain why the Tianic
sank the way it did.
