Another pilot had that same day also contact with the pilots of the 5 avengers.
His name was Robert F. Cox, fly instructor from Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
This happened to him:
`I was flying all-round in the erea of the airport of Lauderdale at 15:40 in the afternoon. I heard the roar of the motors from a plane of ship. On a radio-channel 4805 somebody tried to make contact with somebody who is called "Powers". But nobody answered his appeal. Several times he asked, "Powers" to look at his compass and say what his position was. Finally Powers answered and said: I don't know where we are. I think we are lost after the last turning point. At about 15:45 I called the control tower of Ford Lauderdale and I told them what was happening. They answered me that they received my message and they understand it. I tried to make contact to: This is FT-74. Does the plane or boat who calling Powers answer me? I don't get an answer, but I tried another time. That time I succeed. The unknown person told that he was Charles Carrol Taylor, the leader of the five Avengers.'
It was 5 December. The weather was clear and sunny. FT-28; I said, this is FT-74. What are your problems? Ft 28 answered: My compass is not all right and I am trying to reach Fort Lauderdale in Florida. I am flying over a island-group. I am sure that I am above Florida Keys, but I don't know at witch height.
A few moments later the connection became worse. Cox was at the distance of 40 miles of Fort Lauderdale and he could hardly understand Taylor. The airport Port Everglade tried to get contact with flight 19 and Cox land on Fort Lauderdale. Port Everglade to Taylor: Could you hear us? Taylor: Yes. Port Everglade: Let on other plane with a good compass takes over the leading and takes you to the airport. Taylor: I will do that.
In the mean time people from Port Everglade- where they could heart some peaches of the conversations between the pilots of flight 19, they understand that none of the pilots wanted to take over the leading- to Ford Lauderdale: The contact between FT-74 (Cox) and FT-28 (Taylor) become worse when FT-74 was flying to the south. That's why we think that the planes of flight 19 are above the Bahamas.
At about 17:50 the connection became very worse. At 17:55 it start to become dark. Port Everglade: Change frequency till 3000 kcs (for emergency).
Taylor: I can't do that. I have to get my planes together.
In the mean time it became fully dark. At about 18:00 they had calculated the position of flight 19.
The planes were above the Atlantic Ocean somewhere above the moth of the Bahamas Islands and on the east of New Smyrna, Florida. They only need to talk to Taylor to say that he had to fly to the west to reach the coast.
06:02: Unknown person: Probably we have to go down for a moment.
06:03: Taylor called Power: Do you hear me?
06:04: Do you hear me?
06:05: Taylor called Powers: This is Taylor.
-. We're above - Do you think so
06.06: unknown person: We must see lights know
06.07: Port Everglade calling Taylor: Do you read me?
06.09: Port Everglade: Do you read me? (One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten).
The lost planes of flight 19 did not know they flew direct into a legend. Many stories, articles and books should describe their last flight. Movies should bring them last flight to oblivion again alive. The crew from flight 19 should be the well-known victims of the most dangerously piece of the Atlantic Ocean that gets sinister names like 'Triangle of dead', 'The sea of accidents', 'The crypt of the Atlantic Ocean'. But the most famous name isThe Bermuda Triangle.
There was deep dejection on Fort Lauderdale. But there should happen something terrible again. At 19.30 hour took a Martin Mariner seaplane, with 13 men on board, for a rescue operation off. The enormously and powerful Mariner was completely equipped with rescue- and survival attributes. With his special strengthen torso it was possible to land on raw sea. The Mariner flew in northwest direction to the place where the avengers supposed were located. At 20.30 hour the control tower from Fort Lauderdale was trying to make contact with the Mariner for asking what the coordinates were from the Mariner. There was no replay...the control tower tried feverish to make contact with the Mariner.
It was pitch-dark, but the boats of the coast guard were still searching to survivors. The next morning there was prepared a massive rescue operation.
But there wasn't found any wreckage or clues from the missing airplanes.
