Bermuda was discovered by Juan de Bermudez. The Captain of La Garza, a Spanish vessel.

1511
In Spain a book of recent Spanish discoveries had in it a map of an island named La Bermudas.

1543
A French map of the world, showing La Bermuda was published.
Spanish Rock was inscribed with this date.

1593
Henry May, an English traveller spent a few months time on the island after surviving the wreck of a French ship.

Diego Ramirez, captain of a Spanish galleon, after spending 3 weeks on the island files a map and description of Bermuda with his principals in Spain.

1609
The Sea Venture was wrecked on the reefs of Bermuda, and 150 people seek safety on the island. These were the first settlers.

1610
The settlers left Bermuda, all except 2, and sailed on to Virginia. Sir George Somers returned to Bermuda, and a few months later died on the island. His heart was buried in St.George's, and his body taken and buried in Dorset, England, where he was born.

1612
The Virginia Company sent sixty more settlers to the island, one of which was Richard Moore, the recently appointed Governor of Bermuda. Bermuda was sold by the Virginia Company to the newly-formed Bermuda Company. That same year the Town of St. George's was founded.

1616
The islands were divided into shares and tribes (parishes). Each parish was named after investors in the Bermuda Company. The first slaves are brought to Bermuda to dive for pearls and to harvest tobacco and sugarcane.

1620
The first Bermuda Parliament meeting, held at St. Peter's Church in St. George's, made it the 3rd oldest parliament in the world after Iceland and Great Britain.

1684
Bermuda reverts to Crown rule after the dissolution of the Bermuda Company. Sir Robert Robinson was appointed the Bermuda's first Governor.

1775
The American Continental Congress announced a trade embargo against all colonies remaining loyal to the Crown. When Bermuda tried to bargain with salt, the colonies refused and requested gunpowder instead. A group of Bermudians then stole the island's supply of gunpowder from Powder Magazine in St. George's and shipped it to the rebels in America. The embargo was then lifted.

1784
This year marked the beginning of the bermuda newspaper. Joseph Stockdale edited and printed The Bermuda Gazette

The Town of Hamilton was incorporated.

1793
The Town of St. George's was officially incorporated and received its first Mayor; Andrew Durnford.

Irish Poet Tom Moore arrived in Bermuda. During his four month stay he met and had an affair with Hester Tucker, whom he called Nea in his love poems.

1809
Ireland Island was bought by the British Government to use for the Naval Base.

1813
The Bermuda Post Office was established.

1815
The town of Hamilton became the capital of Bermuda.

1828
The Royal Gazette newspaper was issued for the first time.

1843
This year marked the abolition of slavery in Bermuda.

1846
Gibbs Hill Lighthouse was put into service for the first time, to reduce the number of shipwrecks near the island.

1871
The opening of the Causeway, the road linking St.George's with the rest of Bermuda.

1877
Mark Twain made his first visit to the island.

1883
Princess Louise, daughter of the Queen Victoria, visited Bermuda and in her honor the Pembroke Hotel is renamed The Princess.

1887
Installation of Bermuda's first telephones.

1899
The Causeway was swept away during a severe storm.

The Causeway is reopened.

1902
The Cup Match cricket tournament was played for the first time.

1908
The Bermuda Electric Light Power and Traction Company start providing electricity to a small group of users.

1928
The Founding of the Bermuda Aquarium and Museum.

1937
Imperial Airways (later to become British Airways) begins the first scheduled air service to Bermuda from Port Washington in the U.S.

1944
Captain Joe Talley was suddenly woken up because water streamed into his cabin of his ship the Wild Goose...

The first plane of flight 19 took off from the Fort Lauderdale Naval Air Station on 5 December 1945 short after two o'clock in the afternoon. The pilot was the flight-leader lieutenant Charles Taylor. The other four Avengers followed with short breaks. It would be just a routine-flight, one of the many practice-flights, which were carried out day-to-day from the airport...

Automobiles were allowed by law on Bermuda. Dr. E F Gordon left Bermuda for London, bearing a petition protesting the political and racial conditions in Bermuda.

1947
In Britain's House of Commons a White Paper on Bermuda is debated. The matters raised in Dr Gordon's petition are handed back to Bermuda for Bermudians to deal with.

1948
A British passenger plane, 440 miles Northeast of Bermuda and heading for the Island, disappears. The 29 passengers and crew were lost without a trace.

1949, July

When Jim Blocker flew into a cloud cover he noticed that his radio- and his navigation equipment were out of order and his compass turned around.

Bermuda holds its first General Election under the new Constitution. The UBP wins thirty seats; and the PLP wins the other ten. Sir Henry Tucker, leader of the UBP, is appointed Bermuda's first Government Leader.
