South America

Introduction:

South America is bordered on the east by the Atlantic Ocean, on the west by the Pacific Ocean, and on the north by the Caribbean Sea. It is connected to North America by the Isthmus of Panama. The fourth largest of the continents, and takes up about one eighth of the land surface of the Earth. South America can be divided into four distinct climatic zones - tropical, temperate, dry, and cold based on the general characteristics that typify the continent. This page provides both a Winter Forecast and a Spring Forecast.

Winter Forecast:

Temperature:

There are a strong possibility of above average temperatures for most of South America north of 20S latitude.

Along eastern Argentina, Uruguay, and the southern part of Brazil, will experience below average temperatures.

All other areas will experience normal to near normal temperatures.


Red represents above average, Blue below average, and White normal

Precipitation:


Red represents above average, Blue below average, and White normal

 There is an enhanced probability for above average precipitation for the tropical Pacific coast of South America, extending through Peru. Also, parts of southern and southeastern South America will experience above average average precipitation.

Much of northern South America will experience below average precipitation.

All other areas will experience normal to near normal precipitation.

Spring Forecast:

Temperature:

The strong possibility of above average temperatures for most of South America north of 20S latitude continues.

Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay, will probably experience near-normal temperatures.

All other areas will experience normal temperatures


Red represents above average, White normal

Precipitation:


Red represents above average, Blue below average, and White normal

 The probability of above average precipitation continues along the tropical Pacific coast through Columbia and Peru. Also, there is an increased chance for above average rainfall over southern South America.

The likeliness for below average rainfall over northern South America will be seen in the northern half of Brazil.

All other areas will experience normal rainfall.
