and Review for:
Africa
| Africa is the second largest landmass in the world, after Eurasia, and its area is more than three times that of the United States. There are more than 50 independent countries in Africa and on the islands off its coasts. The continent of Africa lies astride the equator, extending beyond 35 N. latitude and reaching almost 35 S., or about as far north as Washington, D.C., and about as far south as Uruguay. The climate and vegetation reflect the position of the continent astride the equator. A sequence of ecological zones extends north and south of the equator: the equatorial forest, the savanna grasslands, the desert, and the area of mild, Mediterranean-type climate. Temperature:
![]() Red represents above average, blue below average, and white average |
There is a chance for above
average temperatures for areas below the equator, along
the south and west coasts of West Africa, and along the
Mediterranean coast. There is a probability for below normal temperatures along the East African coast. All other regions will experience near-normal conditions. |
Precipitation:
| There is an increased probability
for above normal rainfall for east Africa over
coastal areas between 0 and 10 N. There is a chance for below normal rainfall over the northern part of the tropical belt extending from the west into the center of the continent. Also, below average precipitation will be seen over much of South Africa and along the north-east of Africa, near the Red Sea. All other regions will experience near normal conditions. |
