Double Displacement Lab

Purpose:  What are the results of a double-displacement reqaction?

Materials:
1 dropper bottle containing CuSO4 solution
1 dropper bottle containing NaOH solution
1 test tube
1 test tube rack to hold test tube
Safety Goggles
Caution: CuSO4 is poisonous!  Handle with care, and wash your hands thoroughly at end of the activity.

Procedure:

  1. Place 20 drops CuSO4 solution in the test tube.  Observe the color.
  2. Add 20 drops NaOH solution to the CuSO4 in the test tube.  Observe the color.
  3. Observe the results.
Observation/Data:

Material Appearence
CuSO4 Blue translucent liquid
NaOH  Clear, colorless,translucent liquid
CuSO4 + NaOH Blue opaque precipitate and clear liquid
CuSO4 + 2NaOH ----------> Cu(OH)2 + Na2SO4

Help me out here!
1.  What are the reactants?
Copper sulfate and Sodium hydroxide Copper hydroxide and Sodium sulfate Copper oxide and Sodium sulfate
2.  What are the products?
Sodium hydroxide and Copper sulfate Copper hydroxide and Sodium sulfate Copper sulfate and Sodium cupric
3.  What was in the test tube at the end of the reaction?
Copper hydroxide and Sodium sulfate Copper sulfate and Sodium hydroxide Cupric carbonate and Sodium sulfate
4.  What type reaction is this?
Decompostion Single displacement Double displacement
5.  What are the results of a double displacement reaction?
The elements trade partners with other elements in different compounds. One element or set of elements replaces another element or set  of elements in a compound.  Two or more substances combine together to form one
