Afghanistan: A Religous Issue
Summary: Ever since the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan in 1979, the country has been at war. The U.S., through the CIA, poured weapons into the country during the 1980s and this helped convince Moscow in 1988 to agree to a withdrawal, but the fighting has never ended as ethnic groups and religious sects took up arms against each other. The Taliban militia, fervent Islamic fundamentalists, are the latest to dominate the country. Since rolling victorious into the capital, Kabul, in Sept. 1996, the Taliban has clamped a harsh interpretation of Islamic justice on the country, one that singles out in particular the country's women. The Taliban have barred women from outdoor work except in the medical sector, and have banned girls from education.
