Other comments on the future of computers
I think that eventually people will figure out how to do away with frames, and make computers easier for people to use, so that there will be more people who are not technically oriented who can use computers more easily.

New or futuristic software
I predict that computers in the future will be able to do many more things without a human programmer. As the science of artificial intelligence grows, there will no longer be software as we know it. The computer will "make its own" software.

Most useful change or trend for computers
I think eventually most people in America will have home pages, and it will be easier to find a person's homepage without knowing her URL, so people will be able to find out more about one another much more easily. I also think we will see more computers in public places. (Maybe the way there are public pay phones everywhere now, there will one day be public pay computers everywhere)

Most useful change or trend for computers
I believe the future computers will have interesting patterns on them. Like, '70's-ish tye-dye and "grovy" stickers or something weird. Either that or they will become voice activated. Voice commands will make America Online or Erols a whole lot better. AOL is already working on voice IM's and Voice mail on the computer, so I believe that is somewhere in the near future.

Most useful change or trend for computers
In the near future I believe that, despite efforts, many underfunded cities and states will still have problems with the year 2000 bug. Currently, D.C. only has about 25% of its government computers and likely will have problems. Problems include social security where the computer will think that it is 1900 and someone born in 1901 will be thought of as not being born yet. That way they will not receive their social security money which will be not so good.

Most useful change or trend for computers
In the near term, I believe that an economic trend occurring in the Operating System industry will bring about the most useful change - the rise of the use of Linux and FreeBSD (Unix), especially in the server market, will (hopefully) propel Microsoft to develop more robustness into their server and client Operating System products. This will, in turn, provide for greater productivity as users will not be dealing with unreliable operating systems and can turn their attention to the problems presented by their real work. A second change which I see imminent is the release of desk-top based 64-bit CPU chipsets. This is a tremendous step, considering that it's not been too many years ago that the first 64-bit mainframe computers were developed. Even minicomputers were developed as 16-bit machines until the late 70s/very early 80s - see Tracy Kidder "The Soul of a New Machine." I wish you all luck with the project!

Most useful change or trend for computers
Computers will continue to get smaller, faster, have more massive storage space, be more user friendly. Color laser printers as common and cheap as black and white dot matrix printers were in the early 80s. Be less expensive; everyone will be able to afford one. Computers to the first decade of the next century will be as common as radios were to your grandparents in the 20s and 30s, to TVs in the 50s and 60s and microwaves and VCRs in the 80s. Look at how the size of those items has shrunk (along with the price tags!) Fewer wires, more laser connnections. Easier integration of various unrelated software programs. More use of digital devices interfacing with computers, such as the new cameras. MUCH faster access to the 'net; no download wait times!

Most useful change or trend for computers
I feel the MOST useful change for computers is the decrease in size and weight making computers more travel friendly and space saving.Small computers, such as laptops and palmtops, have made it easier to accsess information at your leisure or on the run. Also interactive and touch screen computers, make it easier for those still learning how to use computers, to do so without confusion or frustration.

New or futuristic hardware
Hardware that's built into the house and "invisible" like the phone, smoke alarm, oven, etc. is today! Wouldn't it be great if you could just say "Computer, did I get new email?" from your armchair and it'd tell you!

Computers will have a greater and greater impact on our lives, and we will be interacting with them in an increasing number of ways. The computer field is going to provide a tremendous number of jobs.

New or futuristic hardware
By 2050 (highly optimistic) we will be able to build quantum computers. The basic unit in quantum computing is the qubit. unlike the bit, which can hold a '0' or '1' state, it can be both! Where a 3-bit number can hold one of eight values, a 3-qubit number can hold eight values simultaneously! Thus, computing power is increased by orders of magnitude.

Comdex fall 98 has just happened and new technology has been reviled. Bill Gates, Jeff Papows, Charles Wang, Eckhard Pfeiffer, John Seely Brown and Rick Thomas, Lawrence J. Ellison, and John Sidgmore were the key note speakers and have shared what they are doing now and how they are going to brake into the future. Now you can watch these speeches at http://www.vstream.com/comdex/. Have fun and learn.
