I use a computer for several things in my home. The most important is for a calendar program that helps me keep track of Doctor’s appointments, school holidays, birthdays, a to-do list, and all that I need to be reminded of each day /week / month. The particularly good feature is that this calendar links to a contacts file, with names, addresses, and phone numbers, making it easy to attach relevant information to my appointment times. In our home, we also have a computer database to track our videos and baseball autograph collections.

The word processor on the computer I find helpful for keeping lists of medications, allergies, or things-to-do, as well as for writing letters or stories. When I have insomnia, I’ll sometimes use it for playing games.

I also find the Internet and electronic email groups invaluable for searching out medical information and a support group for coping with my daughter’s chronic fatigue syndrome and Fibromyalgia.

I have used the computer for a limited variety of things. I have used mostly the word processor part for letters to friends, to-do lists for myself and a morning list of things to do for my son as he gets ready for school. I have used it for our school "walk-around" fundraiser to type a list of scheduled kindergarten through second grade volunteers. I have been using it to help put together a childrens church bulletin with "find-a-word" puzzles and codes to go along with the sermon of the week. I do this infrequently. I am currently learning to use it for E-mail and hope to make great use of this feature. I also used it to make a chart for my son to keep track of his peak flows when he uses the meter to follow his asthma. We can find the average by using this chart and this helps us to know how to regulate his medicine.

I am fairly new to the world of computers, but having one has made a tremendous difference to my life. I use the computer to do research on educational rights and chronic illness. It used to take so much time to locate information by snail mail or cost me so much by telephone. The computer makes it possible to locate and disseminate information with ease.

I am handicapped, and no longer working. I spend much time at home. Since I live alone, I sometimes yearn for human interaction. In addition, I sometimes feel isolated with my disorder-- it is not easy for healthy people to comprehend my experience with it. I use the computer both to communicate with friends and family, and to participate in online groups whose purpose is to allow those with disabilities to share information and support with one another. I use both email and an instant messaging service that allows real time communication via the keyboard. This allows me an active social life, in spite of being limited in my activities much of the time. I have developed several close relationships with people I have never met in person! I have set up a website that is part communication, part journal/art. It is a celebration of my community and family. It has been a way for me to work through the massive changes and adjustments that I have had to make in my life, and to celebrate the gifts that have come to me in the process. It is both a gift to the people in my life, and an act of personal expression.

I use my computer and Internet connection to access information and to initiate contact and support with people across the world. This is mostly done via e-mail lists as well as personal e-mail correspondence with friends and family. I also use my computer to help administrate my personal finances. And lastly I use my computer for fun and relaxation!

My favorite use of the computer is for keeping in touch with my family. I live in Denver, Colorado, but my three grown children and their families (including three grandchildren) live thousands of miles from here--in Virginia, in California, and in Hong Kong. If I have a question to ask them. I can send it by E-mail and get a quick answer. It's almost as if they were living in Denver too. I hope I can continue to keep in touch with them this way for years to come. [submitted by email from Emilie's grandmother] ____

My computer is my link to the outside world. I have a chronic, debilitating disease, called CFIDS, that keeps me homebound most of the time. I have joined an online support group, and have found encouragement, knowledge and companionship there. I was very lonely, and sad, before I found my internet support group. Now I have lots of people to talk to, and my life is richer. My Mac is my window to the world, and I would hate to think of my life without it.

I've already entered one under the "other" category for use of computers in my office, but thought I'd include use here of computers as a volunteer. I'm an auxiliary police officer for Fairfax County (that means we're volunteers) and I use a computer in two different ways. In the department, I work for the office of the DWI coordinator, who is responsible for organising and running all programs for the department that have to do with drunk driving prevention and enforcement. One of these projects is the Habitual Offender program, which assists officers taking defendants whom they have arrested for DWI or related offenses to court. If such a defendant has previous DWI or related charges on their driving record, I run their record through DMV, and obtain infomation on their previous arrests. If arrests for DWI occured in VA, I write the court in which the previous case was tried, and try to obtain the relevant paperwork (showing how the case resolved, was he guilty, etc.) Once this paperwork has been received, we provide it to the officer so that he can make a stronger case when HE goes to court, showing that a person has a history of DWI offenses, so that his sentence may be appropriately lengthened the more offenses he has, in one more effort to keep drunk drivers off the road. I use WordPerfect, Quattro Pro and network access to IBM mainframes to do this. I also track all the statistics of the auxiliary unit; as volunteers, we are required to give a certain number of hours a year to the program, and we have to have the statistics to back this up. I produce 14-15 reports on various topics to show what auxiliary officers do with their time; I do this on a Macintosh, at home, in Excel. Hope this info helps. e-c

I have started my own business, selling interesting, useful or collectable items I buy at yard sales or auctions on the internet. There is a large internet site dedicated to buying and selling, and it lets people literally shop all over the world in the one spot! So I use my computer to list my items, keep track of the auctions, and contact my buyers when it's all done. The only thing I can't do is MAIL the item over the internet. Maybe someday!

Having a computer at home during a chronic illness has helped to keep me sane. I can still "use my brain" from the comfort of my own bed. I have learned to program in HTML, and have learned to design my own graphics. I also helped create an internet support group mailing list. My husband and I also do our banking online, as well as shopping every now and again.

I have a chronic illness that keeps me home, so I use my computer to keep in touch with friends, and to surf the web for entertainment. I can also find out new medical information (new treatments for my condition, research medicines my doctor prescribes. etc). My computer has been very valuable to me both for education and for play!

I'm housebound so really my computer keeps me sane, as its my contact to the rest of the world. I realise just how much I use it every time its crashes! :). I've made lots of friends through CFS mailing lists, and learnt a lot about the disease through support groups pages. I also do schoolwork on the computer as typing is less tiring, plus I can edit out my brainfoggy mistakes! Hope you win :)

We use computers in a variety of ways in our work at home and as a volunteer with schools and at the YMCA. At the school, the computer is used in conjuction with the student database (kept in an Access database) to create the student directory, provided to PTA members and teachers. The computer is also used with a program sponsored by the PTA called Accelerated Reader, which provides students with tests for a selection of books which have been color coded according to difficulty. The students are assigned to the code corresponding to their current reading level, take tests on the computer when they have finished, and participate in a variety of programs and contests which we hope encourage reading and reading comprehension. At the YMCA, we again use the computer for database management. Throw away those 3by5 cards! We manage a day camp where around 1200 children sign up for up to ten weeks of summer camp. Each week we need to know how many and who is coming and assign them to an initial group, and then make sure they are on the lists for additional activities of their choice. We also want in easily accessible form emergency contact, transportation, code word, health and special information lists that don't have to be begun from scratch every week. At home, it's homework time! We use primarily Word and Excel, Encarta and the Internet for research and homework. We also do geneological research, play a variety of games, and keep track of any of a variety of documents and records. I'm also using the computer to teach the children how to type and to expand my skills, researching several professional categories as I look forward to returning to the job market. With the computer at home I have taught myself Access and am fair now at Visual Basic. The one thing I expected which hasn't come true is that in the 70's I thought we would use a lot less paper as we turned to the computers. Nothing could be further from the truth! Love these computers/can't live without them!
