Introduction to Software
Software is a particular set of instructions that direct the computer to perform tasks and give the user an interface to manipulate the processed data. Sellers usually distribute software using CD-ROMs and floppy disks. Software is usually installed on a hard drive. Another word for software is a program.

Software is developed by technicians called programmers. Programmers use what is called a programming language. A programming language is a code that the programmers use to tell the computer what to do, how to do it, and what to display. Everything that the computer does is directed step by step using code.

The main piece of software is the operating system. It controls the computer and provides the user with a starting point to run other programs and manipulate data. Some common operating systems are Macintosh OS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2 and UNIX.

Along with the operating system there are many other types of software. Different software have different functions. Some programs commonly used are word processors, Internet browsers, calendars, spread sheets, and, of course, games.
