The Great Zimbabwe

When Mauch arrived in Africa we was forced to travel alone, due to his lack of funding for an expedition. With him he carried a compass and sextant, a hunting knife, a blanket, a tin bowl, books, painting and writing equipment, a shotgun, and two revolvers, for a total of 60 pounds. It is important to note that one of his reasons for coming to South Africa was in search for the biblical city of Ophir. Its legendary Queen Sheba was said to have supplied King Solomon with a great abundance of diamonds and gold, which was mined in Ophir.
Mauch traveled through South Africa, when he heard that nearby lay stone ruins. This rose his spirits, because other than discovering a gold and diamond mine, nothing else was accomplished. He was determined to see the ruins for himself.
