Alex and Eddie Van Halen grew up in the Netherlands where they studied classical music. In 1965 they moved to California and began to play Rock and Roll. The brothers, Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth formed Van Halen.
Van Halen's sound was different than most heavy metal artists. It was a "more polished, smooth sound.." with "rapid-fire, arpeggio guitar solos...fast paced, light bass lines," and of course David Lee Roth's trademark falsetto screams. They were discovered by Gene Simmons of KISS and got a record deal with Warner Bros. Their first album sold over 2 million copies. They followed up with 4 top 10 albums. |
