The Tibetan Freedom Concert

"We Tibetans are human beings; we have the right to live as a human brotherhood, we have the right to gain our happiness. In America, people always regard the importance of freedom, the importance of liberty which we also want." --Dalai Lama

The Chinese invaded the peaceful country of Tibet in 1950. Since then they have been under Chinese communist rule. The Chinese have killed over 1.2 million Tibetans and destroyed 6,000 monastaries. The Tibetans are a peaceful people led by the Dalai Lama and resist the Chinese rule without violence.

There is no freedom for Tibetans and China is destroying their environment. They dump nuclear waste and cut down trees. Tibet's sacred lake the Yamdrok Tso is being drained for Chinese hydroelectric power. Although the Chinese say that Tibet has always been a part of Chinese rule, they are completely different in language, food, dress, and lifestyle.

The Tibetan Freedom Concert was held on June 13 and 14 in the RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. with bands like U2, Radiohead, Porno for Pyros, Alanis Morisette, the Beastie Boys, and the Foo Fighters. Its purpose was to support the Tibetan Freedom movement.

Adam Yauch of the Beastie Boys tells why he got involved in the Tibetan Freedom movement: "Maybe it's that I've met some of these people and see how happy they are, despite what's going on. Laughing all the time without the same agenda of worries that so many of us carry in our modern society. Or maybe it's that I see their society as an example of how people can live in peace, working towards enlightenment. An example or blueprint of a way that a culture can operate in harmony with itself and the land."
