Rock and Roll music started out in the 50’s through R&B artists such as Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, and Little Richard. Alan Freed, a Cleveland disc jockey boldly went against the mainstream, and began playing this new kind of music, which he called "Rock and Roll." It was on his show, "The Moondog Rock and Roll Show," that he introduced these new artists.

To the young generation, life became one big party with songs like "Rock Around the Clock" by Bill Haley and the Comets. They really felt that this was their music. Partying and sex were common recreational activities. Parents put a negative label on Rock and Roll because they didn’t understand it. The "Rebel" image was popular among high school boys.

The 50’s and 60’s were time of great change in America. The music reflected a great social uprising in our country.
