Punk and Ska, when our powers combine..

"Non-violence, less pollution, more togetherness, more industry, less institution like prisons; more schools, more hospitals. These things come through the music. The music is those things and those things is the music." --Lee Perry.

Reggae music is an essential element of the Rastafarian religion. The Rastafarian religion originated in the 1930's. Black, green, and red were the rasta standard along with dreadlocks and reggae music. Reggae came out in the late 1960's. Original artists were Peter Tosh, Bob Marley, Bunny Livingstone and Joe Higgs. They would all sit together and sing. They called themselves the Wailers and recorded "Simmer Down" and "Rude Boy" which made it to the Jamaican hitlist. But these were ska songs. They then moved to reggae.

Reggae music is a music based on positive things like togetherness and peace. Groups like the Maytals, Burning Spear, Black Uhru, and Steel Pulse stood out against the capitilism imposed on them by Britian.

Many punk bands in the UK listened to reggae. "I has heavily into reggae" said Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols. A punk group called The Clash remade a reggae hit "Police and Thieves".
