On June 16-18,the Monterey POP Festival was held on the county fairgrounds of Monterey California. More than 30 bands were scheduled to play over a period of 3 days. Never before had this many bands rock bands played together at the same time. This was where many famous musicians of the 60's got their big debut. People like Janis Joplin, Jimi Hendrix, and the Who became known at this Festival. The Festival was planned by producers Lou Adler, John Philips, Alan Pariser, and music publicist Derek Taylor. They wanted to bring American and British Pop together in one big love festival. They wanted people to be able to put the country's war and racial problems away and "Be happy, be free, wear flowers, bring bells--have a festival." The money made went to several different charities like the LA Free Clinic, the LA Children's Museum, and the UCLA Children's Hospital. Money made off the Festival videos and CD's continue to be donated to worthy causes today.
